Retrofitting Your Stale Website Using AI – Blog Edition

In the fast-paced world of digital content, your website is more than just a portfolio; it’s your online storefront representing your business.  Is it fresh?  Is it even indexing on Google?  Even if your home page and top-level pages are updated regularly your whole store is public and I’m sorry to say it’s got bugs and is covered in dust.  Especially the blog.  The blog is the story of your business and it’s time you give it love.

Here is a fix.

I’m thinking of my videography website.  For videographers, whose art often speaks louder through visuals than words, the written content on my site might have been neglected. I don’t like writing for my videography blog.  I already spent a week telling the story through video, the last thing I wanted to do was write about it.  And it showed.  I wrote a paragraph at best, embedded the video, and moved on.

Like artists, other companies such as realtors, construction companies, and nonprofits as just some examples of organizations that need to dust off their old blog posts or write new ones where the old ones should be.  You may have hundreds of blog posts that barely register in searches—they’re either underwritten, vague, or overly reliant on images and videos because writing isn’t your favorite part of the job. But what if you could turn each blog post into a beacon for your website?  You can, I’ve done it and it works quickly.

Here is the GPT I created making updating and writing blogs super easy.

BEST BLOGS EVER

Best Blog Ever

Paste an old blog post into it and it should expand and restructure for better visibility and readability.  However, you’re not done. Be sure the new information is accurate.  I’ve found AI loves to get creative and create backstories out of nowhere.

Would you like to create your own?   This is how you can retrofit your website using AI.  Lots of numbers and bullet points.

Step 1: Transforming Existing Blog Posts into SEO Powerhouses

Your existing blog posts could be a goldmine.  It’s worth the effort to find out. AI will enhance the content, optimize for search engines, and engage your audience even if you hate writing.

Instructions:

  1. Content Audit: Start with your website’s evergreen posts. Identify posts that don’t go out of style, venues, photos, or projects you are most proud of or you think should get more attention. These are the ones in need of deeper content, SEO optimization, or better engagement hooks.
  2. AI-Powered Content Enhancement: Use AI tools like OpenAI’s GPT-4 or Claude to add depth to your posts. These tools can fill in gaps, provide detailed explanations, and ensure your content is both comprehensive and engaging.  Detailed instructions on how to do this are below.
  3. SEO Optimization: Ensure each post is optimized for search engines. This involves:
    • Adding relevant keywords related to your business and your specific niche. This can involve additional research to see what your potential customers are looking for and what your competition is using.   (I’ll tackle that in the coming weeks)
    • Improving meta descriptions and titles for better click-through rates.  Do not just copy and paste your meta description.
    • AI rewrite to ensure your post is properly structuring headings and subheadings to make the content more readable.
  4. Meta Descriptions and Titles: Every page needs a unique meta description. Use AI to generate SEO-friendly meta descriptions and suggest compelling titles that enhance discoverability.   Use AI to make it.  Same with the title.  The whole thing is a dance that isn’t complicated but can’t be ignored.
  5. Clear Call to Action (CTA): Every post should conclude with a clear and compelling CTA. Whether it’s asking readers to subscribe to your newsletter, share the post (must include something worth sharing), or contact you for more information, a CTA can significantly boost engagement.

Step 2: Creating a Private GPT for Seamless Content Management

I had and still have hundreds of posts to update.  Consistency is key, and having a private AI tailored to your needs can make content management a breeze. This is the game-changer.  I’m giving you Open AI’s Chat GTP’s version of this. They make changes often so as of June 2024 this is working as written.

Instructions:

  1. Set Up a Paid AI Account: Sign up for a paid account on platforms like OpenAI, offering advanced models such as GPT-4.  $20 is well spent if you are super user like me.
  2. How to Create a GPT:
    1. Access the GPT Editor:
    2. Create a New GPT:
      • Select “Create a GPT”.
      • In the Create tab, message the GPT Builder to help you build a new GPT. For example, I started with “Helps create and refine engaging, share-worthy blog content, with CTA recommendations.”
    3. Configure  and add Your GPT:
      • Go to the Configure tab to name and set the description of your GPT.
      • Select the actions you would like your GPT to take, such as browsing the web or creating images.
      • Paste these under the instructions.
        1. Creating a New Blog Post:
          • Title: Generate a captivating title relevant to the topic.
          • Introduction: Write a brief, engaging introduction that hooks the reader.
          • Main Content: Develop well-structured sections that provide valuable insights.
          • Conclusion: Summarize the main points and include a call to action.
          • SEO: Add relevant meta descriptions and tags separated by commas.
        2. Refining an Existing Blog Post:
          • Review Content: Ensure clarity and conciseness.
          • Update Information: Check for outdated information and make necessary updates.
          • SEO Optimization: Update keywords, meta descriptions, and tags.
          • Enhance Readability: Improve formatting with subheadings and bullet points.
        3. Crafting Engaging Content:
          • Brevity with Value: Write concise but valuable content.
          • Provocative Content: Include thought-provoking questions or statements to start discussions.
          • Simplify Complex Ideas: Break down complicated topics into digestible parts without losing their essence.
          • Serialization: Create serialized content that builds anticipation for the next installment.
        4. Tailoring Content to Different Genres:
          • Understand Genre Expectations: Customize the tone, style, and format to fit the genre and resonate with the audience.
        5. Optimizing for Local SEO:
          • Location-Specific Keywords: Incorporate naturally within the content.
          • Business Addresses: Mention business addresses and service areas.
          • Google Business Listings: Suggest creating or updating listings for visibility in local searches.
        6. Incorporating Calls to Action (CTAs):
          • Post-Publishing CTA: Decide if a call to action is needed after publishing.
          • Recommend CTAs: Based on the content and reader engagement level, suggest relevant CTAs (e.g., asking readers to comment, share, or subscribe).
        7. Upload Files to give the GPT and idea of your voice or specific information related to your business.
    4. Publish Your GPT:
      • When you’re ready, select “Publish” to make your GPT live.
      • Share your GPT with others if you’d like otherwise you can keep it private.

    Using Your Blogging GPT Effectively

    • Consistent Content Creation: Regularly create new blog posts following the structured approach outlined above.
    • Continuous Improvement: Use the GPT to refine and update existing blog posts to keep them relevant and engaging.
    • Engagement Strategies: Implement the suggested CTAs and engage with readers through comments and social media interactions.
    • SEO Best Practices: Continuously optimize your blog for SEO to increase visibility and attract more readers.  SEO focus changes constantly so don’t let your blog get dusty again.

By following these guidelines, your GPT can effectively assist you in creating and refining blog posts that engage readers, foster discussions, and enhance your blog’s visibility and reach.

  3. Automate Content Creation: Now that you create this GPT you can go through your entire blog history. It can not get easier.  Again, you can use my GPT or your own GPT and easily generate blogs using the rules you give it.  This ensures a consistent tone and high-quality content across your site.
  4. Reshare Updated Content: After updating your content, share it across your social media channels and other platforms to reach a broader audience.

By following these guidelines, your GPT can effectively assist you in creating and refining blog posts that engage readers, foster discussions, and enhance your blog’s visibility and reach.
